Choosing the right stainless steel decorative sheet requires balancing aesthetics with long-term performance. Faced with a wide range of options, professionals should consider four key factors: material grade, coloring technology, surface finish, and protective film quality.
1. Material Grade – balancing cost and corrosion resistance
316 stainless steel: the first choice for harsh environments (e.g. coastal areas, chemical plants, outdoor installations). It offers excellent resistance to chlorides and acids, providing outstanding durability, but at a higher cost.
304 stainless steel: widely favoured for its good cost performance ratio, suitable for most conventional indoor and outdoor decorative applications.
201 stainless steel: lower in price, but prone to rust in humid or polluted environments. Buyers should be alert to unscrupulous suppliers who may substitute inferior grades. When in doubt, request a mill test certificate or use a simple on site test to verify the actual grade.
2. Coloring Process – the difference between PVD and water plating
As introduced in our previous article, physical vapour deposition (PVD) and water plating are the two mainstream coloring methods.
PVD coloring: strong adhesion, excellent UV resistance, and environmentally friendly – ideal for long term decorative projects where colour durability is important.
Water plating: lower cost, but less durable.
Recommendation: For projects with high requirements on colour durability and environmental friendliness, give priority to PVD colored sheets.
3. Surface Finish – hairline, mirror and etched patterns
The surface finish directly affects the final design.
Hairline (brushed) finish: fine and uniform texture that hides minor scratches – a popular choice for elevator cabins and kitchen splashbacks.
Mirror finish: high reflectivity, delivering a premium look – suitable for luxury hotels, showrooms and other settings that demand visual impact.
Etched patterns: can be customised or incorporate artistic designs, adding unique character to architectural elements. However, the cost increases with design complexity and process requirements. Etched sheets are suitable for small batch orders and are often used in high-end elevator cabins.
4. Protective Film – details that cannot be overlooked
When further processing is required: be sure to specify the use of laser grade protective film, which withstands high temperature cutting and bending without degrading, effectively protecting the sheet surface.
When using conventional protective film: remove it within the shelf life recommended by the manufacturer. Avoid prolonged application or direct sunlight, which can cause the film to age and become brittle, leading to residue, difficult removal, or ghosting on the surface.
